Buying a Spanish/Classical Guitar...

Guitar Lesson

I want to find out what would be considered the PRIMO spanish guitar
available on the market today? I know Cordoba makes a good classical and
I've played a few decent models that have been made by Alvarez and even
Takamine. I also know that Segovia played a Hauser for many years. I
play some spanish. and I dabble with Classical here and
there. I have also been known to play jazz on a spanish guitar just
because the feel is so much more comfortable. What would be recommended?

If you want a high end boutique guitar. and sounds amazing. She is a fabulous player and
would make any guitar sound good though.

Also look into Ramirez. Made exclusively in Madrid and a few 100 make
it to America each year. I was lucky enough to find an R2 (the middle
of the three qualities they produce) a couple of years ago for about
$2K. Incredible bell tones - not too bright.

Guitar Setup

Guitar Lesson

I recently took my guitar to a tech and he set it up and it sounded much
better. I checked the intonation with my peterson strobe tuner and it was
"off" a little so I "fixed" it. I'm not sure if it sounded better or not
but it didn't seem to have a huge effect. I think the worse ones were just a
few cents off.

Now the strange thing is that usually with my tuner it would jump all crazy
and I could never get a steady pitch from my guitar(even if it was zero it
would "jump" around like it wasn't getting a big enough signal... its always
done this with about 1-2 years use and I never had it do anything else).

Now today I use it to tune my guitar and I get almost perfect pitches.
i.e.. when I tune to A it goes to A and doesn't move or jump around. (if
I'm flat. it will scroll down ofcousre but when I adjust it it will stop
scrolling instead of acting crazy).

Then I check the intonation and notice the higher pitched strings are all
flat... I have to do a lot of adjusting on the high E. some
on the G and a little on the D.

But when I play my guitar it sounds like shit. The same why it sounded
before I took it to the tech.

Play open string and tune up to pitch.
Check harmonic just to make sure.
Fret 12th fret like I would normally play it(not pretty to hard).
if its flat then I shorten saddle piece(or whatever its called).. I repeat
this process until when I fret the 12 fret it is in pitch with the open
string(or atleast within a cent or two).

Right now my guitar is "intonated" by that method and when I check. all the
notes at the 12 fret are within a cent or 2 from there open string note.
This was the method that I read about in several books and on the net to
intonate a guitar.

I am using strings that I haven't changed in a while but I don't see
why it would make a huge difference(sure the strings might sound "dull" or
something but they should still hold pitch and can be intonated properly?
When I intonate I might sure not to apply pressure to the neck so that I
don't increase the tension and stuff. I make sure the guitar is in normal
playing position too.

My Peterson V-SAM and the batteries are good(actually I just used an adapter
today to make sure it wasn't the batteries).

Anyone have any idea about whats going on? The neck is in good shape and
isn't warped and I'm using sperzel tunners. BTW. my guitar is a fender
strat ;)

I'll try some new strings later and see if thats the problem. My guess is
that its not because I've been through this before and its always the same
thing. I'm always having to adjust the intonation even though I locked down
the floating bridge(so it shouldn't be moving).

Make sure you are not setting up intonation with the Peterson set to GTR.
GTR is only for tuning. It has offsets for guitar when in GTR mode.

If the nut is standard (read. not Feiten or Earvana. etc.) you might benefit
from intonating by comparing the 5th and 17th frets. If you play a lot of
"cowboy chords" or open strings. this method will probably not be of as much
help. Intonation on most guitars is really a game of averages. Some tones
are a little sharp. some tones a bit flat. It's the nature of the beast.
One of the reasons for using reverb is that it helps to sweeten chords by
"masking" differences between the overtone series of each string.

He more than likely also adjusted the pickup height. I raze and lower mine
all the time for different "chunkiness". But if you get it too close to the
strings. your octave fret will sound off.

Tuning a guitar and setting the intonation is a compromise anyway.

You need to know when your tuner lies to you. Oh. yeah they do lie. I
suspect you're justifying the sustained open string with the attack of the
fretted note. If your guitar is properly set up all notes should be able to
be played in tune.

I restrung the guitar and intonated it using the 5th freth 17th fret idea.
It sounds better. Still not great but more like I think it should. I also
increased the height of the pu's... looked a little to far away IMO.

Sacred Guitar

Guitar is becoming much more used in contemporary sevices in many churches
in my area. I am the lead guitarist for my Church's praise band and enjoy
it. I spent many a year on the road opening for nationals.etc. What's really
cool is most of the music I play at Church I get to open up and wail
on.....as much as my rock days. It's a 600 seat santuary with built in PA 48
chan mix & lighting. matrix monitoring. the works. Tried all my amps here. keep going between my
smallest combos.

FrankenStrating

I am toying with the idea of building a FrankenStrat to
suite me a bit better. Looking at bodies is it worth buying an SX. Stagg
or Monterey etc for its body?
Seems to be a damn site cheaper than buying a Warmoth one. Is there any
real difference in the type of wood used in these bodies? They all
advertise as solid Alder bodies.

If you dont want to pay for a warmoth at least go with mighty mite... but
body only. I heard bad things about their necks. You do have to drill most
holes yourself though. Also there is not a whole lot of choice in terms of
finish. and the finish is like a 2mm thick poly!

or just plug the holes (or leave them there and just drill for 2 point trem
using the 6 holes as a guide)... then redrill.

Videotaping and Singing

I have started trying to videotape myelf playing. But I am having a problem.
When I play off camera. I dont seem to have any problems getting through the
song without too many errors. But when I am taping. Cant seem to get
past the first few chords or notes without going into total screw up mode. I
must have recorded 500 files yesterday and deleted them all as none measured
up even though I am playing some fairly basic blues. Cant figure out what
the problem is. Although I was thinking possibly when I just play for myself
I dont worry too much about mistakes but when I am recording and know its
going to be posted for all to see I notice every single little error. (After
watching half a dozen of those videos of that guy on the accoustic doing
those Beatles songs it shouldnt matter to me). I plan to try again tomorow.
Any recomendations?
I do a lot of playing and zero singing.I am a fairly half
decent singer. can carry a tune so so. Ill probably try both but I was
thinking it might be better to play the song. then add the vocals in after I
record the guitar rather than singing along with playing. which I find to be
hard..lately.

Affirmed on all the above posts. I'll record 3 or 4 tracks. go
back and blend together the best of each for recordings. Everybody
does it. so don't think you're alone in not being able to zip
through a riff blemish-free.

I have found some of my best sounds after totally screwing up.
getting a little mad. I wouldn't have found some of these tones if I
hadn't kept the tape running.

I think it was Neil Young who said just record everything. then you won't
always be thinking about "ok.

New free tool for playing with tabs!

I am a youth worship leader at church I used to have to change the
chords of tabs for different singers every week. .So I created a new
tool to change the tone/key of tab chords automatically.

A request to those posting links to sales and auctions

Can i please ask if youre selling multiple items just list them in 1 post
rather than list each item individually.

Your request is not an unreasonable one. The problem is that. while it
remains somewhere in the newsgroup forever. it doesn't remain viewable by
most readers for more than a week or so as many people have their newsgroup
readers set to download only a few hundred headers at a time. Your post will
soon be in the newsgroup black hole.

Trying to make a procedural request in an unmoderated newsgroup is sort of
like pissing in the wind. you repost it every few days.
in which case it's like pissing into a smaller wind. ;-)

Behringer Hellbabae question

I just got one...new. I know it's generally not considered a great
pedal. but I needed one quick for one song I'm recording..so $29 made
sense.. and it sounds pretty good once tweaked...BUT. When I shut off
the wah (or I should say when it shuts itself off automatically)It
does not seem to go into any by-pass mode. It just turns off all
sound. I tried both the by-pass output as well as the regular output
output. Works fine with wah...no sound through amp when wah is off. Am
I missing something obvious..or is this a defect in the pedal (I know
there are generally a lot of defects in these pedals)?

on the underside of the pedal. close to the battery holder. you'll find
a slot. This slot is labelled Bypass Timer Adjuster - and it allows you
to set a trim potentiometer (you'll need a small flat screrwdriver for
this). Have you tried adjusting this setting ?
If this doesn't help. then perhaps you'd let us know wherebaouts you
are located so that we can initiate warranty service procedures.

Amplifier Effects Loop

I've got a question regarding how to use the effects loop on my guitar
amplifier. The amp in question is a 60W 4x10 Fender Hot Rod Deville.
There's PREAMP OUT and a POWER AMP IN jacks besides two INPUT jacks.
How do I hook up e.g.. my TS7 Tubescreamer using the effects loop on
the amp?

I was thinking that too. My THD's effect's loop is line level. not
instrument level.

Guitar Lesson

fret trainer

I have a problem in recognizing from fret 7 to fret 10. and gives you the score for every fret.
Enjoy it :-)

I don't play notes.

E barre chords - the root is on the 6th.
That's how you learn where every note is. Or use the basic scales like
an A minor pentatonic scale (A-C-D-E-G or Root-b3rd-4th-5th-b7th):

If you know where an A is you should know where C (the b3rd) is. Use
other relationships. Notice that on the 6th. & 4th strings the 4th
is always right below.
The b7 is two frets behind any note - you should know that F is the
flat 7 for G - so if you know where a G is you should know where the
F's are....yadda-yadda-yadda

thanks for your greetings :-D
I added a "delay" parameters so that you can slow down it a little bit.
let me know..

and 6 strings down. but the
other 3 requires me to think. Please leave this up for a while. or is
there a way to download this program?
